7 Gift Ideas for Father’s Day

Father's Day Gift Ideas KT

Can you believe we are in June already? 2017 is flying by and Father’s Day is around the corner. Father’s Day is one of my favorite commercial holidays for two main reasons; my Daddy is one of my favorite people and quite honestly our phenomenal and present fathers too often get drowned out by the deadbeats. We can do better celebrating them for all that they do while we have them. I love giving gifts in general but the key to a good gift is making it an intentional one. Give gifts with that specific recipient in mind. In an effort to help you celebrate your Daddy and/or your favorite Daddy figures (uncles, brothers, godfathers, etc), here’s 7 gift ideas just for them!

Grooming Products & Tools

For whatever reason beards are all the rage now. I’m personally not a fan but I do like that companies are creating products specifically for men and their needs. Ladies, we love to ‘borrow’ all their stuff, so I think they would really appreciate gifts we cannot (or just wouldn’t ‘borrow’). A few years ago I gave my father a shave set from Bevel, which is Black owned and specifically created to address the grooming needs of men of color. I got him the 30-day starter kit and he still uses it every day.

Experiences

I don’t know many men who don’t love a good activity. Groupon and LivingSocial are perfect for these types of gifts. A few years ago we got my father a race car experience where he got to drive a  on the speedway. Of course, he loved it and it was a memorable experience. What’s also great about these is that they rarely require much planning beyond picking a date which makes it low effort for you and still a great gift for them. See what is going on in your city or a neighboring one. Is there a car show or cool expo coming up? I loved going to car shows with my father as a kid! A professional sports game? That’s what you call a win-win!

Time

Maybe it’s just me (one of my love languages is quality time) but your time is one of the best gifts you can give, and especially to a parent as an adult child. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive. Some of the best time I’ve spent with my father was just spending hours talking about random things, watching a good (or bad) movie, or joining him for anything he likes to do. Time is something you can’t get back so when you give it to someone, it means a lot. Or at least I like to think so. This is the perfect gift for when you are a broke college student (or just broke lol). What is your father into? Enjoy? When is the last time you accompanied him with his favorite hobby?

Gifts for Dad

A Good Meal

They do say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and while this man is presumably your father/father figure and you likely are a big chunk of his heart already, who doesn’t love a good meal? This doesn’t have to be expensive either unless of course, your Pops has expensive taste. Make him a meal he doesn’t get often. Maybe a childhood favorite with all the fixin’s. Or just his favorite meal. My Daddy loves red snapper and steamed shrimp so he usually gets a full spread breakfast and dinner with one or both to enjoy. We don’t have red snapper often because it’s a pricier fish so that makes it even more special. If cooking isn’t your thing you can also head out to his favorite restaurant or try somewhere new!

Gadgets

I don’t think I know a man who isn’t into gadgets! Every year there are a ton of new tech items for any and every application you can imagine. What that means is there is something for everyone no matter what their interests are. Take some time to think about your father’s (or husband, etc) hobbies and interests and find out what’s new or improved in that space. Things like laptops, tablets, smartwatches, cell phones, cameras, storage devices, tool sets, tvs/projectors, drones–pretty much anything that’ll make their lives more fun or tasks easier, are foolproof gifts.

Cologne

I’ll be honest and admit that this is my least favorite gift idea because I find it to be a really cliché (ties, socks, cologne) Father’s Day gift but I’ve noticed that cologne has really become popular again. Men are secretive about the scents they use, are into mixing scents, and constantly trying out new ones. My father LOVES cologne, he can never have enough. In fact, he has a dresser top full of them. If you’re not up on the most popular scents and he doesn’t have a favorite, head to your local Macy’s or department store and ask the salesperson for recommendations. Then smell them. Pick one you like!

Travel

I know. You’re probably thinking “just because you’re always on a plane doesn’t mean everyone else wants to/can”, but travel can mean so many things! If you have the coins and he’s about an adventure, book him a flight to somewhere he’s always wanted to go or hasn’t been in a long time. For my father’s 65th birthday a few years ago we surprised him with a trip to the Bahamas where he worked before coming to the US. One of his best friends and former boss still lives there. It was so much of a surprise that he didn’t know where he was going until he got to security. Then we surprised him again when two of his kids showed him! I don’t think he’d been back since he left over 30 years ago but I’m sure it’s a trip he’ll never forget. This can be done on a smaller scale of course. Maybe there’s a nice hotel or resort in your area where you can book him a room for a weekend. The possibilities are endless! You know I support a trip, especially one that involves a stamp!

I compiled this from the perspective of a child since I don’t have children but all of these suggestions apply for any relationships you may have. If it’s your husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, or best friend–make sure you take some time to show the fathers in your life they’re appreciated.
